Carbon Management

The issue of climate change is certainly relevant to communication and environmental management of businesses. In this context, are increasingly specific activities targeted to the knowledge of their emissions of CO2 from the perspective of life cycle in order to seek solutions to reduce or offset them. LCE has conducted several projects in this area by applying the LCA methodology as well as the requirements of the GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org), PAS 2050 (www.bsigroup.com), and ISO 14064 (www.iso.org).

LCE supports companies for the carbon management strategy (both Corporate and Products) and upon request, LCE develops calculation models (simplified tool) on the customer's needs with the goal of make simulations.

In the Carbon Management Area LCE covers the following services:

  • Product Carbon Footprint (PAS 2050:2011, GHG Protocol Product Standard)
  • GHG inventories of organisations (ISO 14064, GHG Protocol)
  • Carbon accounting, management and reporting.
  • Simplified Tool for GHG accounting
  •

    Product Carbon Footprint

A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) is a tool for measuring, managing and communicating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to goods and services.
It is based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) but focuses on a single issue which is global warming.
In response to the need for transparency in the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of products, several standards have been developed or are still under development. There are three main Product Carbon Footprint standards that are or will be applied worldwide: PAS 2050, GHG Protocol and ISO 14067.

    • PAS 2050:2011
Specification for the assessment of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services
PAS 2050 has been published by British Standards (BSI) and came into effect in October 2008. PAS 2050 has already been applied by many companies worldwide and has currently been revised (October 2011) (www.bsigroup.com)

    • GHG Protocol Product Standards
Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard
GHGp has been developed by the WRI/WBCSD and has been launched in October 2011 (www.ghgprotocol.org)

    • ISO 14067
is under development and its expected release date is late 2011.

    GHG inventories of organisations

A Corporate GHG emissions inventory helps companies to account of their emissions, through the use of standardized approaches and principles.
The adoption of a international recognized standard increases consistency and transparency in GHG accounting and reporting and provides business with information that can be used to build an effective strategy to manage and reduce GHG emissions.
LCE adopts both the ISO 14064 and the GHG Protocol in order to ensure a consistent approach to GHG accounting.

    Carbon Offset

Very often the final aim of a company is to offset their residual emissions.
LCE is a partner in this area of some leading companies in the CO2 offset sector, including Lifegate, Asja Ambiente and Climate Partners.
