About us

Studio LCE, Life Cycle Engineering Research & Consulting, is an Engineering Studio based
in Turin and in Venice (Italy) operating in the field of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), environmental sustainable development tools and eco-design with a considerable experience in consultancy service and education programs.

The activities at Studio LCE start in 1992 with a research Ph.D. activity of its ordinary members (Gian Luca Baldo and Massimo Marino) in environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability at Politecnico di Torino (Polytechnic University).

The long term collaboration with Polytechnic, allowed Studio LCE to participate to various
European and International projects (i.e. INCO, CRAFT, INTERREG, LIFE and GROWTH projects sponsored by the European Commission). This activity is still a strategic opportunity for Studio LCE staff to work with partners that have an higher scientific qualification and to lead Studio LCE
to an improved level of consultancy service at private scale.

Actually, Studio LCE is a well known, fully independent, research & consulting company in Europe for LCA, eco-design and environmental communications solutions and has recently entered in the US market with an important contract with a global corporation about an environmental product declaration (EPD) and a climate declaration of a pharmaceutical product.

Studio LCE is a recognized partner of different companies, research centres and manufacturing associations at (inter)national level that have chosen LCE as scientific and technical partner for LCA and EPD (Environmental Product Declarations) activities.

At present, the LCE staff includes about 15 resources: a detailed list with shorts CVs is available on our page LCE participates as direct partner in LIFE programs, such as:

- LIFE03 ENV/IT/000324 [2003-2005] "Definition of an EPD system that can
be applied at international level and its implementation in two pilot countries (Sweden and Italy)" for the Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) development and diffusion.

- LIFE08 ENV/F/00492 [2010-2012] CORINE "Conception Optimisée pour la Réduction de l'Impact des Nuisances Environnementales" (Acronym: Optimized Design for Reducing the Environmental Nuisances Impact), in which LCE is the only foreign partner among ten (Eurocopter is the coordinator).

Since the early nineties, Studio LCE became consultant of the European Commission
(DG ENVIRONMENT) for the development/revision of different Eco-label criteria and for their diffusion in Europe. By now this experience involved the following product groups: floor coverings, bed mattresses, graphic paper and footwear. LCE has also worked in a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cyprus and in the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in Kenya. Important activities for Studio LCE are also implementation of environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 and EMAS.

About educational activities in LCA and ecodesign, Studio LCE regularly offers company
seminars and higher education for Master Degree Courses (post lauream). About LCE partnerships at international level, the collaboration with Boustead Consulting Ltd. (BCL) started in 1994: the last decade gave the opportunity to participate to some BCL projects and to support the improvement of the Boustead Model LCA software tool.

Among the others, the participation to some activities in LCA projects for for PlasticsEurope.
Another important partnership of LCE is with Granta Design Ltd., a company based inCambridge (UK) that has been established by Prof. M. Ashby of Cambridge University.
Granta Design Ltd is worldwide leader in data management for materials selection for design. The collaboration with Granta Design Ltd. produces services like promotion, diffusion and training of Cambridge Engineering Selector, a software for materials and processes selection based on Ashby "bubbles" methodology used in several Universities and companies worldwide.

Finally, Studio LCE is represented by Gian Luca Baldo in the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment Editorial Board.
